“All witches and wizards with undeclared covens must meet in Assembly Hall G before the evening bell rings!”

I frowned as the announcement blasted across the halls, also appearing in an urgent notification on my bespelled tablet. Technically, I was undeclared. With no known elemental affiliation, my classes were a general mishmash of everything offered at Westwood, but in the most basic senses.

I had just finished Dr. Wellesley’s Introduction to Cryptids course and was looking forward to meeting Arlo at the infirmary. My hunger was back, and though I’d been able to deal with it all day, the fact it was back so soon after a double feeding yesterday was making me antsy.

“Hey, Mabe!” Enid called from down the hall, and I jogged to catch up with her. “Did you hear that weird announcement? I wanted to go back to the room and shower before dinner,” she mumbled and sighed.

“Yeah, it’s a bummer. I was going to, er, meet Arlo,” I whispered, tugging the sleeves over my oversized black sweater down to cover the runes on my wrist which were starting to glow a dull red.

“Oh, um, for a snack?” she asked, her voice a little high.

I nodded as we joined the throng of students filing inside the open doors of Assembly Hall G. Looking around, I noted about eighty witches and wizards of various years and was shocked to see so many with undeclared covens.

“Greetings, everyone. Take a seat, please,” Headmistress Armstrong said, her voice loud and clear despite not using a microphone.

A hushed murmur filled the room as Leanna Stolbright joined the headmistress on stage. Armstrong’s face was expressionless, but Stolbright looked downright smug. As far as I knew, no one on campus had seen her in months.

“I have just come from a meeting with the Council of Covens and there has been a vote regarding undeclared students—” Headmistress Armstrong started, but was cut off by Stolbright.

“I have been assigned leadership of all witches and wizards with no coven affiliation. You will undergo a series of tests to see which field of study best suits your ability to help our kind. Now, everyone, please go on your tablets and click on the link you have just received. You may begin the first round of testing when you hear the bell. Now!”

I looked at Enid, my brows furrowed in confusion, but the lavender-eyed witch simply shrugged. There was a chorus of groans as witches and wizards opened the timed test to see it was scheduled to take one hundred and forty-five minutes.

“Silence!” Stolbright shouted, and the wizard sitting to my left yelped, dropping his tablet on the tiled floor. Lucky for him, the thing was magicked to withstand falls.

My stomach growled loudly, and I looked at Enid. Her eyes widened, and I watched her search through her bag until she handed me something. I looked down at the pair of lightly tinted sunglasses and put them on quickly, hoping no one noticed what she had. My eyes were rimmed in red, and soon, everything would turn hazy and crimson.
